How To Break a Pillar in Blender

For a 3D project, I needed a broken pillar. Apparently it’s not possible to make an object solid in Blender, so I had to do a bit of searching and experimenting to try and figure this one out.

I would like to share with you how I did this!

First, I created my pillar.

Then, I added a cube inside the pillar. I Subdivided it twice.

I then added a Displace Modifier. There, I click on ‘New’ -> ‘Show texture in texture tab’.

Under ‘Type’, I click on ‘Clouds’.

I click Apply and Subdivide once more.

I position the object on my pillar, select my pillar and click on the Boolean Modifier.

Here, I set the modifier to ‘Difference’ and the Object to my cube. Then apply.

My pillar is now broken into the shape of my modified cube!

Thank you for checking out my Blender Note! I am by all means a beginner in Blender, so I do not feel qualified to label this post as a 'tip' or 'tutorial'. However, I decided to upload this note for myself, and hopefully it can be useful to others as well.
