The bapao, also sometimes called ‘bakpao’, is a popular snack in the Netherlands. It originates from China, where ‘bak’ means ‘meat’ and ‘pao’ means ‘bun’ in Hokkien Chinese dialect.
Although originally from China, the snack spread to other parts of Asia, including Indonesia. In Indonesia, the filling was adapted to suit local tastes and preferences. From there, the snack eventually made its way to the Netherlands.
The bapao is basically the Indonesian version of the ‘baozi’. In the Netherlands, they are typically available with three different fillings: chicken, beef and shoarma. But satay, jalapeno and veggie also seem to be available.
It is originally meant to be steamed in order to prepare it, but since that was not an option, I heated it up in a pan. It’s delicious either way!
